Description
Hanyu 17 Years Old 1990 is a single cask single malt distilled at the closed Hanyu distillery in Saitama Prefecture in 1990 and bottled in 2007 at cask strength by Ichiro Akuto. The cask history runs from Ex-Bourbon through a Japanese oak finish, a pairing that brings two very different wood influences to bear on the same spirit.
Japanese oak, or mizunara, is porous and slow to yield, but its signature sandalwood, incense and subtle coconut notes begin to assert themselves as the finishing period extends. After 17 years with bourbon wood doing the primary work, the Japanese oak finish adds an aromatic layer that is distinctly different from either sherry or American oak in character. At 55.5% the interplay of vanilla from the bourbon years and the temple-wood fragrance of the mizunara finish is presented at full concentration.
