Description
Gran Cruz Porto LBV 2003 is a Late Bottled Vintage Port from the Gran Cruz house, one of Portugal's largest Port producers, drawn from Douro Valley fruit grown on the steep terraced slopes above the river. Late Bottled Vintage designates a Port from a single declared year that spends longer in cask than a classic Vintage before release.
The base wine is fortified mid-fermentation with grape spirit, which halts the yeast and leaves natural sweetness in place. The 2003 was then aged around four to six years in wood before bottling, longer than a Ruby, which softens the tannins and begins to build the dried-fruit and leather notes that mark a maturing LBV while keeping the deep colour of a reductively aged wine.
Expect aromas of blackberry and plum with clove and nutmeg lift, then a deep sweet palate of dark berry, blackcurrant, dark chocolate and a savoury edge of leather and dried fig. It works well after dinner with dark chocolate or a plate of hard cheese, or alongside a cigar.
