Description
This is an aged tawny from Fonseca, one of the historic Port houses, carrying an average age of twenty years across the wines in the blend. Fonseca cellars its aged tawnies upriver in the warmer, drier Douro rather than in Vila Nova de Gaia, and that heat lends its old tawnies a distinctive baked richness.
The wine is fortified mid-fermentation with grape spirit in the Port manner, then aged slowly in seasoned oak casks. Over two decades of oxidative maturation the deep ruby colour of youth fades to amber with russet highlights, the tannins soften and the fruit turns from fresh red berry toward dried fruit, nut and caramel as controlled contact with air reshapes the wine.
The bouquet is complex, opening on plummy mature fruit with cinnamon and butterscotch, then walnut and hazelnut cream, singed orange peel and dried fig. The palate is full and velvety, carrying toffee, marzipan and mocha into a long, clean finish. Serve at room temperature or lightly cooled as a digestif, with dark chocolate, walnuts, hard cheese or a cigar.
