A dry, light Nicaraguan column still rum aged five years, woody and citrus tinged with a leathery, oak driven finish, made by Flor de Cana with genuinely no added sugar and built more for cola and cocktails than the tasting glass.
Description
Flor de Cana 5 Anos Anejo Clasico comes from Compania Licorera in Nicaragua, a house known for slow ageing and a genuinely dry approach where no sugar is added after distillation. That honesty is the selling point here: where many Latin style rums are softened with dosage, this one is left clean, so the column still molasses spirit and the oak do all the talking.
Five years in ex bourbon barrels give a light, woody profile with tropical fruit and citrus on the nose, then a drier, slightly alcoholic palate of wood, fruit and leather. The finish stays dry and oaky rather than sweet. It is unshowy neat and works best as an honest, budget friendly mixer, smooth enough in cola or a simple cocktail while staying free of the sugar that defines much of the category.
