This Dumbarton was bottled by Buds & Barrels, a 21 year old, at 58.9%. Deep and oily, all coconut, creme brulee and vanilla. About a hundred geese, the Scotch Watch, guarded its warehouses from 1959. Its grain was the backbone of the Ballantine’s blend for decades. This is a deep, oily old single grain of real age.

Description
A Dumbarton single grain of a 21 year old chosen by the bottler Buds & Barrels, distilled in 2000, bottled at 58.9%, one of 142 bottles. Dumbarton, one of Scotland's great grain distilleries, was demolished after closing in 2002. The complex also housed the Inverleven and Lomond malt stills, now also gone.
Run off the distillery's continuous column stills, for the light, sweet grain spirit Dumbarton was known for. Ex-Bourbon casks held the grain for decades, soft oak that drives the sweetness. At oxidative maturity esters build and ellagitannins add a gentle, drying grip over the sweet grain. With the distillery gone, the casks that remain are a finite record of its make. Decades in cask build a waxy, polished depth over the light Dumbarton spirit. Refill oak lets the clean grain show, the wood adding coconut and a buttery toffee. With Dumbarton gone, every bottle draws on a finite, dwindling stock.
At its natural 58.9% it is concentrated. Oak lactones lend a deep coconut and vanillin a sweet vanilla, with a crème brûlée richness. Soft toffee and vanilla sit behind the sweetness. The finish is deep, oily and creamy. This is the sweet, oily grain of a vanished Lowland distillery.
