Roasted oak, black pepper and caramelised fruit open this Doña Celia Añejo, a Jalisco tequila rested a year in ex-bourbon casks, its hand painted porcelain bottle nodding to the figure of La Catrina.
Description
Doña Celia Añejo is a Blue Weber tequila from Casa Maestri in Jalisco, designed by co-founder Celia Maestri and presented in a hand painted porcelain bottle inspired by La Catrina, the calavera etched by José Guadalupe Posada in 1910. The agave is drawn from both the lowland valley and the Jalisco highlands, and the spirit rests one year in ex-bourbon whiskey casks.
The agave is cooked in brick hornos and autoclaves, extracted on a roller mill, fermented in steel tanks in the usual tequila manner and distilled twice. A year in ex-bourbon oak builds a nose of roasted oak, black pepper, caramelised fruit and sugared almond, with the palate carrying vanilla and cinnamon, banana and almond, roasted pepper and burnt cherry over a thread of honey. The finish is soft and supple with vanilla and a spicy undertone.
