Coffee, caramel, vanilla and Christmas spice make this 17 Year Old Diamond from Plantation a rich, velvety winter sipper, a Port Mourant style Guyanese rum bottled at 56.3 percent and noticeably sweetened, more comfort pour than dry Demerara.
Description
Maison Ferrand bottled this Plantation Diamond from the 1999 vintage, a seventeen year old Guyanese rum built around Port Mourant pot still spirit. Maison Ferrand double ages its rums and is open about using dosage, and that sweetness is clearly present here, so this reads as a rounded, dessert leaning Demerara rather than a dry one.
The Port Mourant base supplies dark chocolate, coffee, raisins, plum and woody depth, while the added sugar and port finish pile on caramel, vanilla, maple and a warm sweep of cinnamon, cloves and Christmas spice. It drinks denser and more velvety than El Dorado 15, and despite a stout 56.3 percent it stays soft and easy. Honestly a sweet, spiced winter sipper for anyone who likes their aged Guyanese rum on the indulgent side.
