A 21 year old Clarendon from 1999, pot still and ex-bourbon matured, trading youthful funk for mellow tropical fruit, leather and oak with a peachy, nutty finish, reduced to a graceful 46.7% and free of added sugar.
Description
This single cask Clarendon was distilled in 1999 and selected by Maison Ferrand for its Plantation range. Clarendon is the island's great workhorse distillery, running both pot and column, and the pot still spirit here has been given long maturation in ex-bourbon wood before bottling at a gentle 46.7%, unsweetened.
Twenty-one years, much of it under Caribbean heat, has softened the loud ester profile into something rounder and more contemplative. Ester and tropical fruit still lead the aroma alongside woody, leathery depth, while the palate brings oak, tropical fruit, leather and citrus, closing on peaches, nuttiness and lingering fruit. The reduction keeps it approachable rather than fierce, a mature Jamaican that shows what time in the tropics does to pot still funk, mellowing the varnish into orchard and stone fruit while keeping the distillery signature legible. A quietly serious after-dinner pour.
