An eight-year Guadeloupe vieux agricole from Montebello, distilled in 2014 from cane juice and matured in ex-bourbon oak at 42%, citrus and fresh aromatics over sugarcane, warm spice and a dry, woody finish that stays light on its feet.
Description
Montebello, made by the Carrere distillery on Basse-Terre, is a traditional Guadeloupe agricole house, and this vieux from the 2014 vintage shows its style at a relaxed 42%. Distilled on a column still from fresh sugar-cane juice and aged eight years in American oak ex-bourbon barrels before reduction, it is bottled unsweetened in keeping with the agricole tradition.
The nose is bright and woody, citrus and fresh notes over orchard fruit. The palate keeps the sugarcane core but layers in spice and citrus zest with a clean wood frame, leading to a dry finish of spice, oak and lingering cane. Tasters describe it as well-rounded and very drinkable, an easy, balanced vieux that wears its eight tropical years lightly rather than turning heavy or tannic. It makes an approachable introduction to aged Guadeloupe agricole for anyone moving up from blancs.
