Carrere Montebello LA RENCONTRE (Distillerie du Gorvello) 2015

Montebello is a traditional Guadeloupe agricole distillery on Basse-Terre, and this La Rencontre bottling pairs its fresh-cane spirit with an unusual cask choice. Drawn from a 2015 vintage and pressed from fresh sugar-cane juice rather than molasses, it spends time in pommeau casks, the Norman apple-and-cider aperitif barrels, for a distinctive fruity finish.

Matured first in ex-bourbon oak before that pommeau finish, it keeps the cane character intact while gaining a layer of apple and red fruit: fresh, rounded fruit on the nose, then apple, fresh cane and light wood across a smooth palate, with apple, barrel and a floral note on the finish. The pommeau lifts the fruit without masking the agricole core. At a single-cask 49.1% it stays balanced and very approachable, a thoughtful, fruit-driven sipper and a fun twist on the style.
