Description
Cadenhead's bottled this Cameronbridge single grain, aged 27 year old distilled in 1989 and bottled at 58.9%. A release of 210 bottles. Founded in 1824 by John Haig, Cameronbridge is the oldest and largest grain distillery in Scotland. Water comes from Loch Leven, the mash from wheat, the spirit drawn off three column stills.
It was drawn from continuous Coffey stills for a light grain spirit, for a delicate spirit that leans on the cask with age. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending coconut and vanilla. Past two decades the grain deepens into coconut, toffee and crème brûlée. Long ageing turns light grain into a deep, oily, dessert sweet whisky. The site was expanded again in 2007 in a forty million pound investment. The Haig name has been tied to Scottish distilling since the 17th century. It was the home of continuous distillation in Scotland, making the country's first commercial grain whisky.
At 58.9%, undiluted, it is deep and sweet. The ex-Bourbon gives vanilla, cream and a dessert sweetness. The mouthfeel is oily, the coconut carried on a sweet body. Toffee and vanilla see out a long finish. This is the grain behind Cameron Brig and Haig Club.
