Description
Spirit distilled in 1989 sits well inside the Highland Distillers ownership era of Bunnahabhain, before the 1999 acquisition by Edrington and the subsequent 2003 sale to Burn Stewart. The cask was filled and laid down in dunnage warehouses where it remained for thirty-five years before being drawn for Gordon & MacPhail's Connoisseurs Choice Cask Strength range in 2025. Cask 5892 yielded a single bottling at 43.6% natural strength.
The 43.6% ABV after thirty-five years is the natural endpoint of long dunnage maturation rather than a deliberate dilution. Spirit fills typically at 63.5% in the Scotch industry; over decades, evaporation through the cask staves slowly draws down both the alcohol and water content, with the rate dependent on warehouse humidity. Bunnahabhain's coastal warehouses by the Sound of Islay carry high humidity, which preserves spirit volume but allows alcohol to evaporate preferentially, producing the gentle decline to mid-forties ABV that's typical of long-aged Islay material.
The cask is American oak, which on a 35 year old delivers deep vanillin, polished oak, soft tropical fruit and the varnish-and-old-furniture aromatic that very long bourbon-style maturation produces. The distillate's oily Margadale-Burn salinity has had decades to integrate into the wood signature, producing a quiet, contemplative spirit rather than a bold one. At natural strength, the bottle drinks softly: water is unnecessary and the texture rewards patience. Natural colour, non-chill-filtered, single cask.
