Big Peat Christmas Edition is a Douglas Laing blended malt, an Islay vatting with Port Ellen among its malts. Big Peat marries the smoky malts of Islay into one bold, characterful dram. Douglas Laing built Big Peat as a tribute to the smoke of Islay.
A blended malt vats single malts from several distilleries, here the peated names of Islay. Built without an age statement, the Port Ellen component lends its refined, oily smoke. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood holding back so the peat speaks. The peat phenols fade only slowly, which is why even very old Port Ellen keeps its smoke. The Port Ellen within ties it to one of Islay's lost legends. Smoke, salt and citrus run through its Islay character. It wears the big, coastal smoke of the island with pride. A modern Islay dram with a thread of the past inside. The Islay malts give it a smoke quite unlike a mainland blend.
At a full 53.9% it is concentrated and oily. Light oak sweetness underneath, while a gently medicinal smoke carries brine, wax and a mineral edge. A lanolin wax and a coastal salinity give it real weight. Embers and sea salt see out a long finish. A smoky, characterful blended malt built on Islay peat and Port Ellen.
