Description
The fifth Extrafass release from Berlin Distillery takes 5 Years Old single malt distilled at Connacht in Ballina, Co. Mayo and gives it a double finish, part Monbazillac, the golden dessert wine of the Dordogne, part Haselnussgeist, a German hazelnut spirit. Cask 52 yielded 371 half litre bottles in 2023.
Over its ex-bourbon base the Monbazillac layers honey, candied citrus and ripe apricot while the hazelnut cask adds a toasted, praline nuttiness. Bottled at 46.4%, it drinks like a liquid nut pastry with the Irish malt's fresh barley underneath, an eccentric finish that suits the young, fruity Mayo spirit surprisingly well.
