Ardbeg 9 Years Old 2011 Cask #2303 (Ex Bourbon)

An unusually young Distillery Single Cask release at 9 years, drawn from ex Bourbon cask #2303 of the 2011 distillation cohort. Most Ardbeg single cask releases sit at 12 years or older once a cask has been individually selected and labelled. The 9 year cut here suggests either a cask that had reached peak expression earlier than typical, or a strategic release to channel younger spirit into the single cask track alongside the longer matured siblings.

Filled into ex Bourbon American oak cask in 2011 and matured on Islay for nine years across the LVMH owned Glenmorangie era. Bottled in 2020 at 57.6% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The 57.6% reading after nine years sits in the expected range for ex Bourbon maturation in the maritime climate, with ethanol attrition tracking the typical curve for the warehouse cycle.

Nine years of American oak interaction delivers concentrated spirit forward expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) build to moderate concentration, while lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde contribute emerging vanilla and baking spice. The modern 50 to 55 ppm peat phenol load (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) reads at concentrated intensity, sharper than longer matured siblings where slow oxidation softens the phenolic edge. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers pineapple, lemon and tropical fruit at peak expression, the spirit still architecture clearly visible before extensive wood interaction.
