Among the rarest Ardbeg releases on record: cask #9859, one of only two 1979 casks Signatory Vintage held to 40 years old, yielding just 24 bottles. Released through the Rare Reserve programme for German importer Kirsch in 2020 and described on Whiskyfun by Serge Valentin as possibly the oldest Ardbeg ever bottled. Sister cask #9861 was released in parallel at 82 bottles and 56.8% ABV.

Filled into a single ex Bourbon American oak barrel on 13 September 1979 during Hiram Walker's late production years and matured for forty years across the 1981 mothball, the late 1980s reopening, the 1996 Allied Distillers final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition and the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled on 17 June 2020 at 51.5% ABV, unfiltered, uncoloured. The 51.5% reading after four decades indicates a remarkably well sealed cask.

Forty years of American oak maturation reaches deep oak equilibrium. Cis and trans oak lactones saturate and slowly hydrolyse, while hemicellulose breakdown products (furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural) reach full caramelisation. The 1979 peat phenols have undergone near complete oxidative conversion, leaving residual guaiacol and syringol in ester bound form, softened to seasoned bonfire ash and tarred rope. Long coastal maturation contributes bromophenol iodine and salted citrus from atmospheric exchange. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature persists as concentrated tropical fruit, a snapshot of Hiram Walker era spirit at its outer maturation limit.
