Description
Cask #3327, sister barrel to cask #3328, both released individually to the Italian market in 2006 under the Glenmorangie single cask programme. The 1974 vintage was the foundation of the post 1997 Ardbeg relaunch through the Provenance series, and the strategy was to release later survivors from the same year barrel by barrel rather than vat them together. Consecutive cask numbers like #3327 and #3328 came from the same fill day in 1974 and share their distillation lineage.
Filled into a refill American oak hogshead during the Hiram Walker era and bottled in 2006 at thirty two years, natural cask strength 54.1% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. At 54.1% after three decades, the cask retained more spirit strength than its near sibling #3328 at 53.5%, a reminder that even consecutive casks vary in stave porosity, char depth and warehouse microclimate.
Higher ABV at this age intensifies extraction compound expression: oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood), hemicellulose furans (almond, toast), and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde (vanilla, spice) read sharper than at diluted strengths. The Ardbeg purifier signature strips heavy congeners during distillation by redirecting reflux through a worm above the spirit still, delivering a clean ester pool that survives long maturation as tropical fruit (pineapple, ripe lemon, mango). The 1974 peat character now reads as tarred rope and seasoned bonfire ash, the result of phenol oxidation across thirty two Islay years.
