Description
Italy holds a distinguished place in Scotch whisky history as the home of the most influential 1980s and 1990s independent imports through Velier, Sestante and Intertrade. Cadenhead's relationship with Italian specialist retail extends through these decades, with country exclusive Authentic Collection releases regularly channelled to enthusiast collectors. The 1993 Ardbeg programme has delivered multiple Italian market bottlings as the cohort has aged through the years.
Filled into refill bourbon hogshead in 1993 during Allied Distillers's intermittent reopening and matured for twenty four years before bottling in 2018 at 54.6% ABV for the Italian market, non chill filtered with no added colour, 138 bottles drawn at natural strength. The 54.6% reading sits in expected range for refill bourbon after almost two and a half decades.
Twenty four years of refill bourbon maturation builds developed oak expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) reach expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans (furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural) deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1993 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) have undergone substantial oxidative conversion, shifting the smoke register toward leather, tarred rope and seasoned bonfire ash. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core.
