Description
Released through Hunter Laing's Old & Rare Platinum Selection two years after the 2013 family business founding. The Old & Rare programme had been Stewart Laing's premium single cask track at Douglas Laing and continued under Hunter Laing after the split. The 1993 vintage carries the typical Allied Distillers era cash flow off loading story: stock acquired by independent bottlers during the intermittent reopening years between the 1981 mothball and the 1996 final closure, before the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition cut off the supply.
Filled into refill American oak in 1993 during Allied's intermittent reopening and matured for twenty one years across the 1996 final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition, the 2004 LVMH purchase and the 2013 Hunter Laing split. Bottled in 2015 at 56.4% ABV under the Hunter Laing imprint, non chill filtered with no added colour.
Twenty one years of refill American oak maturation builds developed oak expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) reach expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1993 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) carry strong intensity with moderate oxidative shift emerging toward leather and tarred rope. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core.
