Released through Old Particular, launched in 2013 as Douglas Laing's new flagship single cask range after the Hunter Laing split. When Stewart Laing left to found Hunter Laing with sons Andrew and Scott, the Old Malt Cask programme moved with him, leaving Fred Laing Jr.'s Douglas Laing to rebuild its single cask portfolio from scratch. Old Particular became the workhorse line, with Xtra Old Particular (XOP) and Directors' Cut populating the wider range. Cask #DL 10065 is among the earliest Old Particular releases.

Filled into refill American oak in 1992 during Allied Distillers's intermittent reopening and matured for twenty one years across the 1996 final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition and the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in 2013 at 48.6% ABV, unfiltered, uncoloured. The release year coincides with the Douglas Laing single cask relaunch following the family business split.

Twenty one years of refill American oak maturation builds developed oak expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) reach expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1992 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) carry strong intensity with moderate oxidative shift emerging. At reduced ABV the polyphenols express more freely than at cask strength. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated tropical fruit.
