Description
Released by Adelphi in 1996, the year Allied Distillers permanently closed Ardbeg before the Glenmorangie acquisition of June 1997. Adelphi has a long history: the original Adelphi distillery operated in Glasgow from 1826 to 1907, and the brand was relaunched as an independent bottler in 1993 by Jamie Walker. The modern Adelphi later acquired the Ardnamurchan distillery in 2014.
Filled into refill American oak cask in 1975 during Hiram Walker's full production years and matured on Islay for twenty one years across the 1981 mothball, the late 1980s reopening, ending just before the 1996 Allied final closure. Bottled in 1996 at 53.8% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. Cask #516 sits within Allied era warehouse cask numbering.
Twenty one years of refill American oak interaction builds developed oak expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) reach expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown adds caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1975 peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) hold strong intensity with moderate oxidative conversion at this age. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated tropical fruit (pineapple, lemon, melon) beneath the integrated phenolic core, a Hiram Walker era spirit fingerprint at the boundary moment between the Allied closure and the Glenmorangie revival.
