Description
Sister cask to the 48.3% Old & Rare Platinum Selection bottling released by Douglas Laing in November 2011, drawn from the same 1991 Allied Distillers era intermittent reopening period and matured for the same twenty year span. The substantial ABV split (48.3% versus 54.5%) between the two casks demonstrates how individual warehouse position and cask seal variation can produce dramatically different retained alcohol levels even from neighbouring refill hogsheads.
Filled into refill hogshead in 1991 during Allied's intermittent reopening period and matured for twenty years across the 1996 final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition and the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in November 2011 at 54.5% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The pre 2013 release pre dates the Hunter Laing split that moved Old & Rare out of Douglas Laing.
Twenty years of refill American oak maturation at retained higher ABV intensifies extraction compound expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) read sharply, hemicellulose breakdown furans deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1991 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) carry strong intensity with moderate oxidative shift emerging. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core, sharper than the lower ABV sibling.
