Description
Duncan Taylor was founded in Glasgow in 1938 as a cask broker, originally trading and storing bulk stock for blenders. The firm evolved through the late twentieth century from broker into independent bottler, with single cask releases becoming the core business under the Hartfield family ownership and later under the Mitchell family who relocated the operation to Huntly in Aberdeenshire. Multiple bottling ranges have emerged: Tantalus, Rare, NC2, Octave and Battlehill among them.
Filled into refill bourbon hogshead in 1994 during Allied Distillers's final production years before the 1996 closure and matured for nineteen years across the 1996 final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition and the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in 2014 at 53% ABV, unfiltered, uncoloured. Cask #347602 carries the high six digit Duncan Taylor cask numbering format used for stock acquired through the broker network.
Nineteen years of refill bourbon maturation builds developed mid age expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) build at expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1994 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) carry strong intensity with emerging oxidative shift toward leather and tarred rope. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core.
