Description
Released through Ardbeg's standard Distillery Single Cask programme, drawn from the 2002 cohort of modern Glenmorangie production. 2002 sits five years after the 1997 acquisition and represents fully stabilised modern operation at the distillery, with the refurbished stillhouse, the modern peating specification at 50 to 55 ppm phenol, and the systematic warehouse routine all firmly in place across the post acquisition years.
Matured on Islay for eighteen years from 2002 through the 2004 LVMH acquisition and into the modern era. Bottled in 2021 at 49.6% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The 49.6% reading represents typical natural strength after almost two decades of refill American oak maturation in the maritime warehouse climate, where humidity favours ethanol attrition over water across the long ageing cycle.
Eighteen years of refill bourbon maturation builds a slightly gentler oak expression than first fill at the same age: cis and trans oak lactones for moderate coconut and oiled wood, hemicellulose furans for caramel and almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde for sweet baking spice. Modern Ardbeg peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) hold strong intensity at this age, delivering classic phenolic smoke. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature carries through with pineapple, lemon and tropical fruit, the distillery's spirit still architecture expressed across long Islay maturation in refill American oak.
