Released through Signatory Vintage's Straight from the Cask programme, drawn from the 1998 distillation cohort. 1998 marks the first full year of production at Ardbeg under Glenmorangie ownership after the June 1997 acquisition ended the silent decade. The vintage carries particular historical weight as the foundation cohort for the modern Ardbeg era, with the spirit returning to peated production after the brief Allied Distillers intermittent reopening years.
Filled into refill American oak in 1998 during the first full year of Glenmorangie ownership and matured for eighteen years across the 2004 LVMH purchase and the 2013 Hunter Laing split. Bottled in 2016 at 56.6% ABV for the French market, non chill filtered with no added colour, drawn from cask #1776. Signatory's Pitlochry operations had been based at the Edradour distillery since 2002.
Eighteen years of refill American oak maturation builds developed mid age expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) reach expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1998 Glenmorangie era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) carry strong intensity at this age, the first modern era spec at 50 to 55 ppm phenol. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated pineapple, lemon and tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core.
