Description
Murray McDavid was founded in 1996 by Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin and Gordon Wright with master distiller Jim McEwan, the same team that subsequently resurrected the silent Bruichladdich distillery in 2000. Mission Gold is Murray McDavid's flagship single cask range, channelling selected casks under cask strength bottling with no chill filtration and no added colour. The 1993 Ardbeg vintage from Allied Distillers's intermittent reopening years was acquired during the bottler's early warehouse buying programme.
Filled into refill American oak cask in 1993 during Allied's intermittent reopening and matured on Islay for eighteen years across the 1996 final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition and the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in 2011 at 56.9% ABV for the Polish market, non chill filtered with no added colour.
Eighteen years of refill American oak maturation builds developed mid age expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) build at expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1993 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) carry strong intensity with moderate oxidative shift emerging. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core.
