Description
Cadenhead's 1994 Ardbeg programme has delivered a steady release schedule across two decades, with the 17 year old following the 2007 pair of 13 year European and German market bottlings and the 2010 cask #1060 15 year. The 1994 distillate is scarcer than the 1993 cohort, with Cadenhead's having acquired the limited last year Allied Distillers era stock during the cash strapped off loading period before the 1996 final closure.
Filled into refill bourbon hogshead in 1994 during Allied's final production years and matured for seventeen years before bottling in 2011 at 55.7% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The 55.7% reading sits in typical range for refill bourbon after seventeen years in the maritime warehouse cycle, with steady ethanol attrition.
Seventeen years of refill bourbon maturation builds developed mid age expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) reach expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1994 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) carry strong intensity with moderate oxidative shift emerging toward leather and tarred rope. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated tropical fruit (pineapple, lemon, melon) beneath the integrated phenolic core.
