Description
An unusual single cask release from Ardbeg's 2006 distillation cohort, matured in Madeira finished cask #2643. Madeira is the fortified wine produced on the Portuguese Atlantic archipelago of the same name, distinguished from other fortifieds by the estufagem process: controlled heating of the wine to between 30 and 50°C for several months, deliberately accelerating oxidation and developing the characteristic caramelised and nutty profile. The casks that previously held this wine deliver a distinctive maturation chemistry to whisky.
Matured on Islay for fifteen years from 2006 under LVMH owned Glenmorangie. Bottled in 2021 at 53.7% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The Madeira cask format (typically 600 litre lodge butts or smaller pipes) loads the spirit with the wine's oxidative residue across the long maturation.
Madeira casks contribute sotolon (the caramelised maple syrup compound, also found in oloroso and vin jaune) developed during estufagem and long oxidative ageing, alongside polyphenols from European oak staves and residual sugars (fructose, glucose) from the fortified base wine. Layered onto modern Ardbeg's 50 to 55 ppm peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol), the Madeira chemistry shifts the smoke register toward caramelised fruit, dried apricot, almond skin and lightly bitter walnut. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature reads as orange peel and stewed citrus beneath the layered fortified wine character.
