Description
A Mission Gold release from Murray McDavid's 1994 Ardbeg programme, bottled in 2008. Mission Gold is the bottler's flagship single cask range, channelling selected casks at cask strength with no chill filtration and no added colour. Murray McDavid was founded in 1996 by Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin and Gordon Wright with Jim McEwan as master distiller, the team that subsequently resurrected the silent Bruichladdich distillery in 2000. The 1994 vintage represents the last full year of Allied Distillers production before the 1996 closure of Ardbeg.
Filled into refill American oak cask in 1994 during Allied's final production years. Matured on Islay for fourteen years across the 1996 final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition and the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in 2008 at 55.3% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour.
Fourteen years of refill American oak maturation builds developed early mid age expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) build at expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans (furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural) deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1994 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) carry strong intensity at this age. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core.
