Description
A German market release from Cadenhead's 1994 Ardbeg programme, running alongside the parallel European market bottling at 58.4% ABV. The 1994 vintage carries additional weight as one of the last production years before Allied Distillers's final 1996 closure of Ardbeg, with even less spirit available than the better stocked 1993 cohort. Cadenhead's acquired stock during Allied's cash strapped off loading period before the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition cut off independent supply.
Filled into refill bourbon hogshead in 1994 during Allied's final production years and matured for thirteen years before bottling in 2007 at 59.7% ABV for the German market, non chill filtered with no added colour. The 59.7% reading is exceptional for a 13 year old refill bourbon Ardbeg, indicating a tightly sealed cask in a cooler warehouse position with reduced ethanol attrition.
Thirteen years of refill bourbon maturation at retained high ABV intensifies extraction compound expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) read sharply, hemicellulose breakdown furans deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1994 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) carry near full intensity at this age. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated pineapple, lemon and tropical fruit beneath the phenolic core, a final Allied era spirit fingerprint preserved at mid maturation.
