Description
A Dutch market Chieftain's Choice from the 1998 distillation cohort, Ardbeg's first full year of Glenmorangie owned production following the June 1997 acquisition from Allied Distillers. The 1998 vintage marks the establishment of the modern operating model under Glenmorangie: recommissioned stillhouse, the modern peating specification at 50 to 55 ppm phenol, and barley sourced from Port Ellen Maltings since the 1981 closure of Ardbeg's own floor maltings.
Filled into refill American oak cask #1778 in 1998 during Glenmorangie's first full year of Ardbeg production. Matured on Islay for eleven years across the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in 2010 at 50% ABV for the Dutch market, non chill filtered with no added colour. The 50% reading at eleven years reflects ethanol attrition through the maritime warehouse cycle.
Eleven years of refill American oak maturation builds early mid age expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) build at moderate concentration, hemicellulose furans deliver emerging caramel and almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The modern Glenmorangie spec peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) read at near full intensity. At reduced ABV the polyphenols express more freely. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core.
