Hakushu Heavily Peated is a no age statement, cask strength single malt from Suntory's forest distillery in Yamanashi Prefecture, released here for Europe in 2013 at 48%. Where the standard Hakushu range features a light and restrained peat presence, this expression uses a heavily peated malt to push the smoke character into a far more prominent position.
Ex-Bourbon cask maturation underpins the spirit, with vanilla and fresh wood framing the amplified smoke. The distillery's underlying herbal and green fruit character persists beneath the heavier peat register, giving the whisky a distinctly Japanese freshness alongside its more robust smoky side. At cask strength, the peat is delivered at full weight and intensity.
