Description

HSE bottles at Distillerie du Simon, and this Big Butt 2014 is a single cask Martinique vieux drawn at full cask strength, 48.9% and unsweetened in line with the island AOC. Seven years of tropical ageing has pushed it well past its stated age, the cane spirit darkening and rounding while keeping the spicy backbone HSE is known for.

Distilled from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice on a creole column and rested in ex-bourbon oak, it opens on roasted almonds, fresh sugarcane and a dusting of cinnamon and anise. The palate is spicy and vanilla led with more cinnamon and clove, then the finish turns fruity on peaches, yellow orchard fruit and a touch of raisin. The strength carries real aromatic intensity rather than heat for its own sake, a vieux for slow neat sipping.
