Flor de Cana’s four year Anejo Oro is a light, clean Nicaraguan from column still molasses, genuinely unsweetened, with caramel, brown sugar and a peppery, lemon edged lift that makes it an honest step up from basic mixing rum.
Description
Flor de Cana 4 Anos Anejo Oro comes from Compania Licorera in Nicaragua, a house known for slow ageing and, unusually for the Spanish style, adding no sugar. That dry, spirit forward approach sets it apart from the sweeter ron of the region, and even at this young four year mark it leans clean and light. Distilled from molasses on a column still and aged in ex bourbon casks, it shows caramel and lemon on the nose alongside a touch of spirit heat.
The palate is light and undemanding, raisin and brown sugar with a burnt sugar edge, finishing peppery with black pepper and more caramel. With no added sugar to round it off, the appeal here is honesty and value rather than depth, a smooth, neutral leaning gold rum that drinks well in cocktails and lifts a daiquiri or painkiller above the most basic white rum. For drinkers building from supermarket bottles toward something cleaner, it is an easy upgrade.
