The lighter, drier entry-point Zacapa made from cane honey, mild vanilla and light wood spice with citrus and green apple, a shorter time in the highland solera giving it a clearer alcohol presence, an easy and well-priced everyday sipper or mixer at 40%.
Description
Solera Centenario Ambar is the entry point to the Zacapa range from Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala, and it runs lighter and drier than the better-known older expression. Like all Zacapa it is built from cane honey, the miel de cana base rather than molasses, and assembled by the highland solera method, where younger and older rums marry over time.
Column distilled and married at altitude, it shows fruity caramel, citrus and vanilla on the nose, a palate of light wood, citrus, honey and vanilla, and a soft honeyed finish. The shorter time in the solera shows in a clearer alcohol presence and a more restrained sweetness than the flagship, with a touch of green apple adding freshness. It is a pleasant, rounded all-rounder, well priced and at home either as a casual neat pour or lengthened in a long drink.
