Remedy Spiced Rum

Remedy Spiced is a flavoured molasses spirit out of Guatemala, made to be approachable and inexpensive rather than to chase the depth of an aged sipper. The base is column still rum, dressed up with sweetness and warming spice so that the orange, vanilla and cinnamon arrive front and centre. It sits squarely in the spiced category, a starting point for newcomers more than a bottle for slow contemplation.

The profile reads sweet throughout, with freshly cut orange peel and raisin on the nose giving way to cinnamon, brown sugar and a candied finish. That sugar is the point here, so it shows best with mixers, where the spice can lift a Dark and Stormy or a fruity cocktail. Taken neat the sweetness can collide with itself, and the flavours lean more confected than layered, but as a cheap, cheerful pour over cola it does exactly the job it sets out to do.
