A darker, smokier take on the Guatemalan Zacapa style, leaning on charred oak, coffee and dark chocolate over caramel, soft and sweet-leaning at 43%, an easy after-dinner sipper rather than a dry spirit.
Description
Ron Zacapa Edicion Negra comes from Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala and follows the house template: a Spanish-style rum built from sugar cane honey rather than molasses, distilled on column still and matured in a highland solera where older and younger rums marry over time. The solera framing is what shapes the blend, so any number on the family belongs to the system rather than to a guaranteed age.
This edition tilts toward charred and roasted character, finished to push smoke, coffee, dark chocolate and burnt-oak depth ahead of the usual honeyed caramel. The result reads rich and dessert-leaning, smooth and gently sweet in the mouth, the kind of soft sipper that takes well to cola or a fireside. At a comfortable 43% it is approachable rather than intense, and in keeping with the smoother end of the category it is best enjoyed for its easy, sweet-edged comfort rather than chased for dryness or grip.
