Description
GlenAllachie from the distillery, a 9 year old, from 2008, cask 569, at 54.8%, 889 bottles in all. GlenAllachie is a Speyside single malt from the hills above Aberlour, below Ben Rinnes. Its water is the Lochnagar Burn, drawn down from the slopes of Ben Rinnes. It was bought in 2017 by Billy Walker and two partners, fresh from selling BenRiach, GlenDronach and Glenglassaugh.
The spirit was drawn from a thick, full bodied wash, for the rich, sherried make GlenAllachie is known for. A Port cask held it, drawing the rich spirit on over the years. Young and extractive, the cask sheds vanillin and toasted sugars over the full, fruity spirit. Long ageing turns the fresh notes towards date, prune and a dark, bittersweet chocolate. The full spirit deepens with time, the cask drawing out its darker register. Maturation runs slow and even in the on site dunnage warehouses at Aberlour.
At its natural 54.8% it is rich and chewy. A deep, dark sweetness, with red berry, plum and a dry spice from the cask. A dark chocolate and a soft oak give it weight. A long finish carries raisin, chocolate and a treacle. This is a full bodied Speyside single malt of real richness.
