Description
An official release of Deanston, a 28 year old, from 1991, at 45%, 1402 bottles in all. Deanston is a green, honeyed Highland malt from the Teith valley, the only Scottish distillery to make its own power. The mill ran for 180 years before cotton declined and the site became a distillery.
The spirit was run through the bulbous stills with their upward sloping lyne arms, for the waxy, honeyed make Deanston is known for. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, the gentle American oak letting the waxy malt lead. Through the evaporative decades the spirit concentrates, esters folding into dried fruit and beeswax. The clean, fruity spirit shows the cask clearly, vanilla and honey to the fore. River Teith water and a long ferment give the fruity, estery Deanston make. Its flagship is the 12 year old, bottled unchillfiltered at 46.3%. Deanston is the only distillery in Scotland to generate all its own power from the river.
Reduced to 45%, it is mellow. A fruity, waxy sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Soft orchard fruit and honey sit behind the cask. A long, honeyed finish carries a green apple and a ginger spice. This is a waxy, honeyed Highland single malt.
