Description
This official Deanston, an 18 year old, at 46.3%. Deanston is a honeyed, waxy Highland malt distilled beside the River Teith since 1966. It draws water from the River Teith, which also drives the turbine that powers the distillery.
The spirit was distilled from unpeated Scottish barley in bulbous copper stills, for a clean, fruity spirit with a waxy edge. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, oak lactones lending vanilla and a little coconut. Into oxidative maturity, slow air ingress builds fruity ethyl esters (apple and pear) and a honeyed depth over the wax. Years in oak round the spirit, the green apple and honey deepening over the wax. It runs an open top mash tun, two wash and two spirit stills of a bulbous shape. The clean, fruity spirit shows the cask clearly, vanilla and honey to the fore. A gentle maturation suits the soft make, the honey and wax growing richer with time.
At an approachable 46.3% it is soft and waxy. A waxy, malty sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The mouthfeel is buttery and waxy, the fruit on a honeyed body. The finish is long, waxy and gently spiced. This is a Highland single malt of real character.
