Description
A Cambus single grain, selected and bottled by Cadenhead's matured to 28 year old distilled in 1991 and bottled at 55.8%. Cambus, one of Scotland's oldest grain distilleries, ran near Alloa from about 1806 until its closure in 1993. Water came from the Lossburn Reservoir, the spirit drawn off two continuous Coffey stills.
It was drawn from Coffey stills on Lossburn Reservoir water, for a delicate spirit that leans on the cask with age. A refill American oak cask held it, building the sweet, oily grain character. Past twenty five years the spirit turns oily and dessert sweet while staying clean. Long ageing turns light grain into a deep, oily, dessert sweet whisky. Cambus was once one of the largest grain distilleries in Scotland. Most surviving Cambus was distilled in the late 1980s and early 1990s, before the doors closed. Grain whisky like this gains coconut and toffee from decades in active oak.
At 55.8%, undiluted, it is deep and sweet. The ex-Bourbon gives a sweet, oily vanilla. The mouthfeel is oily, the coconut carried on a sweet body. Toffee and vanilla see out a long finish. This is a rare single grain from a lost grain distillery.
