Description
This Tobermory was bottled by Silver Seal, aged 20 year old from 1994, drawn from cask 145 and bottled at 53.8%. 228 bottles in all. Tobermory, the unpeated malt of the Isle of Mull, comes from one of Scotland's oldest distilleries. The stills carry boil bulbs and an S shaped kink in the lyne arms, which raises reflux.
Worked through the boil ball stills for an oily, fruity make, for the waxy, fruity spirit Tobermory is known for. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, soft oak that lets the waxy fruit lead. Past twenty years the spirit turns honeyed and waxy while keeping its fruit. Refill oak lets the fruity, waxy Tobermory character lead. Both malts feed the Scottish Leader and Black Bottle blends as well as single malt. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years. It is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland still working.
At a natural 53.8% it is bold and full. A fruity, waxy sweetness, and vanilla and a soft oak come from the bourbon wood. A baked apple and a nutty note lift it. A long, waxy finish carries a green lift. This is a waxy, fruity island single malt.
