Description
A distillery release of 1770 Glasgow, bottled at 46%. The Glasgow Distillery Company took its 1770 name from the city's old Dundashill distillery, and revived Glasgow malt in 2012. The 1770 name recalls that original Glasgow distillery, founded in 1770 at Dundashill.
The spirit was drawn off copper stills fed by Loch Katrine water, for a young, fruity spirit ready for active wood. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, American oak giving vanilla. Natural colour and full strength let the cask character show without dilution. Makar Gin came first, in 2014, and helped fund the return of whisky to the city. The first single malt casks were filled in 2015, the first whisky released in 2018. The distillery is known for an adventurous cask policy, from Cognac and Marsala to Port and Tequila. The 1770 single malt comes in three styles: The Original, the Peated and the Triple Distilled.
At 46% it is soft and fruit forward. Apple, citrus and a gentle malt lead, and the ex-Bourbon lends vanilla, honey and a soft apple. The texture is young and lively, the fruit lifted by oak. It closes bright, fruity and warm. This is a fruity young single malt from Glasgow.
