Lagavulin The Distillers Edition 16 Years Old 1991

This 1991 Distillers Edition was bottled in 2007 at sixteen years old, one of the vintages finished in Oloroso rather than the more usual Pedro Ximenez. Founded in 1816, the distillery sits on Islay's southern shore at Lagavulin Bay.

The spirit is heavily peated and distilled at a deliberate, slow pace. Its second maturation came in Oloroso casks for a drier, nuttier sweetness than PX gives.

Bottled at 43%. Phenols and guaiacol carry the maritime peat, the Oloroso adding fig and raisin with a walnut dryness. Tasting notes take in chocolate, dried fruit, old wood, a sherried character, smoke and tobacco. An Oloroso-finished Distillers Edition.
