Released through Xtra Old Particular Platinum, the senior tier of Douglas Laing's single cask portfolio launched after the 2013 Hunter Laing split. XOP Platinum sits above standard XOP and Old Particular, reserved for casks of 25 years and older from the bottler's deepest archive. The Platinum sub designation references the original Old & Rare Platinum Selection programme that Stewart Laing took with him to Hunter Laing in 2013.
Filled into refill American oak in 1992 during Allied Distillers's intermittent reopening and matured for twenty five years across the 1996 final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition, the 2004 LVMH purchase and the 2013 Hunter Laing split. Bottled in 2018 at 50.5% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. Cask #DL 12290 carries the Douglas Laing sequential numbering format.
Twenty five years of refill American oak maturation builds developed oak expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) reach expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1992 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) have undergone substantial oxidative conversion across two and a half decades, shifting the smoke register toward leather, tarred rope and seasoned bonfire ash. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core.
