Ardbeg 12 Years Old 1993 (Cadenhead’s)

Cadenhead's was founded in 1842 in Aberdeen by George Duncan, with the company taking the Cadenhead name in 1858 when William Cadenhead, Duncan's brother in law, took control. A pivotal moment came in 1972 when J&A Mitchell, owners of Springbank, acquired Cadenhead's and relocated the operation to Campbeltown. Cadenhead's products are now bottled in the Springbank bottling hall, with the flagship Cadenhead's shop a few minutes walk from the distillery entrance.

Filled into a refill bourbon hogshead in 1993 during Allied Distillers's intermittent reopening and matured for twelve years before bottling in February 2006 at 58.2% ABV for the German market, non chill filtered with no added colour, 288 bottles drawn at natural strength. The release sits within Cadenhead's systematic two decade programme of 1993 Ardbeg single cask bottlings.

Twelve years of refill bourbon maturation builds developed mid age expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) build at moderate concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans (furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural) deliver emerging caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1993 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) carry strong intensity at this age, with the Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivering concentrated pineapple, lemon and tropical fruit beneath the phenolic core.
