    Ardbeg 20 Years Old 2001 42%

    Private Single Cask
    700ml / 42%
    Single Malt

    $3084

Single cask Ardbeg distilled 2001 and bottled at 20 years at 42% ABV through the Private Single Cask programme. The 42% strength is unusually low for a modern Ardbeg single cask, suggesting an extended warehouse maturation with high ethanol attrition or a deliberate dilution choice at bottling, marking this release out from typical cask strength siblings.

An unusual single cask release at 42% ABV, a strength typically reserved for standard core range bottlings rather than the cask strength expressions that dominate Ardbeg's Private Single Cask programme. The low ABV could reflect either an extended warehouse run with high ethanol evaporation in a particularly humid storage position, or a deliberate dilution choice at bottling, both rare outcomes for the modern Distillery exclusive programme.

Distilled in 2001, the fourth full year of Glenmorangie owned production at Ardbeg, and matured on Islay for twenty years across the 2004 LVMH acquisition and into the modern era. Bottled at 42% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The Private Single Cask programme channels these archive releases direct through the distillery hand fill scheme to members and visitors.

At reduced ABV the polyphenols and acid compounds express more freely than at cask strength, since ethanol concentration controls solubility of the various extractable wood compounds. Modern Ardbeg's 50 to 55 ppm phenol specification carries through twenty years of maturation as guaiacol, syringol and 4 methylguaiacol smoke, while the Ardbeg purifier ester signature reads as pineapple, lemon and tropical fruit. Lower alcohol means heavier expression of hemicellulose furans (almond, caramel) and lignin vanillin (sweet spice) in the cup, giving a different balance from the cask strength siblings in the same programme.
