Description
Cask #9861, sister to #9859, together making up Signatory Vintage's complete inventory of 1979 Ardbeg held to 40 years old. The two casks yielded 24 and 82 bottles respectively, both released in 2020: #9859 through Rare Reserve for German importer Kirsch, and #9861 through the Cask Strength Collection at the higher 56.8% ABV. Serge Valentin described the pair as possibly the oldest Ardbeg ever bottled.
Filled into a single ex Bourbon American oak barrel in 1979 during Hiram Walker's late production years and matured on Islay for forty years across the 1981 mothball, the late 1980s reopening, the 1996 Allied Distillers final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition and the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in 2020 at 56.8% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The 56.8% reading after four decades is exceptional, indicating an unusually tightly sealed cask.
Forty years of American oak maturation reaches deep oak equilibrium with retained high ABV intensifying extraction compound expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) saturate, hemicellulose furans (furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural) reach full caramelisation, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer dense sweet baking spice. The 1979 peat phenols have undergone substantial oxidative conversion, leaving residual guaiacol and syringol in ester bound form. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature persists as concentrated tropical fruit, a snapshot of Hiram Walker era spirit at its outer maturation limit.
