Description
A Dutch market Chieftain's Limited Edition release from Ian Macleod, drawn from cask #814 of the 1996 distillation cohort. The Limited Edition tier sits above the standard Chieftain's Choice programme, reserved for selected casks with extended ages or notable cask specifications. Ian Macleod, founded 1933 and family owned through the Russell family across multiple generations, has channelled regular Ardbeg single cask releases through its independent bottling programme since the early Glenmorangie revival.
Filled into refill American oak cask #814 in 1996 during Allied Distillers's final production year. Matured on Islay for twenty one years across the 1996 final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition and the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in 2017 at 53.2% ABV for the Dutch market, non chill filtered with no added colour.
Twenty one years of refill American oak maturation builds developed mid age expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) reach expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1996 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) carry strong intensity with moderate oxidative shift emerging toward leather and tarred rope. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core.
