Ardbeg 26 Years Old 1991 Cask #1922 (Mackillop’s Choice)

Mackillop's Choice was established in 1996 by Lorne Mackillop with Angus Dundee, focused on selected single cask releases. The Mackillop family's whisky industry experience underpins the programme's cask selection, with each release presented at natural strength.

Filled into refill American oak cask in 1991 during Allied Distillers's intermittent reopening and matured for twenty six years across the 1996 final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition and the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in 2018 at 40.4% ABV for the Dutch market, unfiltered, uncoloured. The 40.4% reading after more than two and a half decades reflects substantial ethanol attrition through the humid maritime warehouse cycle, with the alcohol level approaching the 40% legal minimum for Scotch whisky.

Twenty six years of refill American oak maturation builds developed oak expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) reach expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans (furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural) deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1991 Allied era peat phenols have undergone substantial oxidative conversion across two and a half decades. At reduced ABV polyphenols and acid compounds express more freely than at cask strength, with the Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivering concentrated tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core.
